Garrett Engle was the type of friend who was always available, any time, a guy you could have a beer with after he hammered out a rock song on his acoustic guitar at the Hangar 24 Craft Brewery in Redlands.
Engle was equally cherished as a worship leader in a Redlands church.
Words of grief and dollars of support continued to pour in Wednesday, Aug. 9, for Engle, 29, who was killed Sunday in a traffic collision, and his wife, Lauren, 26, who was critically injured. The Yucaipa couple’s family dog also died.
Jason Golembeski, 31, the packaging manager at the Redlands brewery, said he had known Garrett Engle since they were in junior high school.
“He’s a musician, a guy who loves beer, someone who would show up at any hour of the day if you needed him,” Golembeski said. “He’s the guy you call to fix your car, the guy you would call to talk. Even if it’s been a month or two, you would pick up where you left off.”
A GoFund Me account had raised $55,995 as of Wednesday for medical and funeral expenses, with many donations in the hundreds of dollars.
Lauren Engle performed with her husband and was a worship leader at their church, Citizens Church in Redlands, as well as Active Church in Yucaipa. Garrett Engle, who also played bass and the drums and sung, performed in a worship band as well.
“You see them on stage and you meet them afterward, and you can tell they are good folks,” said Hangar 24 owner Ben Cook. “It’s a tragedy being hit with this so early in their lives.”
