New principal is all about the littlest learners
Dr. Susan Yakich is a veteran educator and administrator, and when her resume came across Superintendent Jeremy Decker’s desk he was happy to see it.
“It was hard to not get excited when her resume slid across my desk,” Decker said. “I was very excited that she wanted to come to Cloverdale. Susan is a ‘big get’ for Cloverdale. The fact we have someone like her is a big deal for our town.”
Yakich is in her 29th year of education, and in her time has served as a classroom teacher in math and science, a reading recovery teacher, a resources teacher, an assistant principal and a principal. The last role she held for 14 years, most recently at a district in Santa Monica.
“I enjoy being a principal because I love working with the whole school community, and being a support to students and families,” she said.
She has a doctorate from University of Southern California and her work there focused on educational leadership with high-risk students, and closing the achievement gap. “That experience has really helped me in my career in helping students who are most at risk,” she said. “And not just English learners and low income students, but the high achievers can get lost in the shuffle too because no one really thinks about them.”
