The U.S. Navy Honor Guard escorted the body of fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Lenin Priego Zurita from San Francisco International Airport to Tracy on Thursday. Zurita, 20, died suddenly July 30 in his barracks room at the Pentagon, where he was stationed. Autopsy results have not determined a cause of death.
Zurita was recently named Marine of the Quarter, and unbeknownst to him, before he passed away, he was also selected as Marine of the Year, an honor his family accepted on his behalf this week in Washington, D.C., a family friend told Fox 40.
A rosary and vigil will be held at Fry Memorial Chapel, 550 S. Central Ave., Tracy, on Sunday, at 6 p.m., with visitation from 2-9 p.m. A Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 163 W. Eaton Ave. A procession to Veterans Park, 238 Glenhaven Drive, will immediately follow, where Lenin will be honored with full military detail.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Zurita’s family at gofundme.com/funds-for-lenins-family, where family members thanked the community for their “well wishes, your tears and kind words.” “We are proud of our son,” a statement on the page reads. “He will be forever known as a United States Marine.”
