Former Congressman and Riverside County Supervisor Al McCandless died Wednesday, Aug. 9 at his La Quinta home. He had just turned 90.
A Republican, McCandless served a district that covered primarily the San Jacinto and Coachella valleys and San Gorgonio Pass from 1982-1994. When he retired, he was replaced by Sonny Bono. Most of his district is now represented by Raul Ruiz.
McCandless was elected to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 1972 and served until he was elected to Congress.
Born in Brawley, McCandless attended Los Angeles schools before joining the United States Marine Corps and deploying to Japan in 1945. He graduated from UCLA then re-entered the Marines and continued service during the Korean Conflict and continuing in the Marine Reserves through 1961.
He and his father established McCandless Motors in Indio in 1953.
A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, at Coachella Valley Public Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will take place at a future date, according to his obituary.
