MANTECA — A two-vehicle crash Wednesday night in west Manteca left one person dead, two injured and a fourth person — one of the drivers — on the lam from authorities, police reported.
Emergency responders were dispatched about 10:30 p.m. to Woodward Road near McKinley Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered two vehicles on Woodward about 300 yards west of McKinley. A GMC Yukon was on its side and a Toyota Camry was on the south shoulder of the road.
The two occupants of the Toyota had to be extricated by firefighters from the Manteca Fire Department. The passenger, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, according to police.
The male passenger of the GMC Yukon also was transported to an area hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. The driver of that vehicle, according to police, fled the scene before officers arrived.
Both detectives and the Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene to collect evidence. Woodward Road was closed until about 6 a.m. Thursday while they completed their initial investigation. The police report did not provide details of how the crash may have occurred.
