SEAL BEACH >> A 25-year-old man whose pickup truck crossed a median in December in Seal Beach and struck a minivan, killing a 19-year-old woman from Germany, was arrested Wednesday after being charged with manslaughter.
Matthew Ryan Wood of Seal Beach, was arrested after an investigation led the Orange County District Attorney’s Office to charge him with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence while intoxicated, transportation for sale of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with a firearm, Seal Beach police Sgt. Mike Henderson said.
The deceased woman, identified by the county coroner’s office as Lisa Shelhorn, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred just after 1:30 p.m. on Dec. 9 on Westminster Avenue between Seal Beach Boulevard and Bolsa Chica Road where the boulevard passes through the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, according to Henderson.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that a pickup truck driving east on Westminster Avenue passed over the center median into oncoming traffic and struck a minivan which was traveling westbound,” Henderson said shortly after the crash.
“The driver of the truck was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.”
Shelhorn was visiting the area from Germany, according to news reports.
