Aqua Surf School first started in Santa Monica 20 years as a way to share the “gift of surfing” for all ages. Now they bring their classes to the beach cities for the first time when they made Redondo Beach its newest location more than two months ago.
“It’s such a great place to surf, there’s a great culture here,” said manager Pam Sousa about coming to the beach cities.
Aqua Surf School offers not only surf lessons but summer surf camps and corporate/group events as well. With the classes, Sousa said they develop land skills with the students first, teaching them about the surfboard before they go into the water.
“You take time to get to know them and find out what their abilities are, if they have any at all,” Sousa said.
Instructor Garrett Wax said they teach the fundamentals of surfing as well as some ocean education. He said every student progresses on their own.
“We meet them where they’re at and try to help them along,” Wax said. “Sometimes kids learn really quickly, sometimes it takes a little while to get them there. But every time a kid gets up on a surfboard, whether it took a day or 10 minutes, we’re excited.”
