Portland looks to Bay Area to fill top schools job – California News

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A deputy superintendent from San Francisco has been chosen to lead Oregon’s largest school district.

The Portland Public Schools board voted Friday to hire Guadalupe Guerrero as superintendent. Since 2012, he’s been the San Francisco district’s deputy superintendent of instruction, innovation and social justice.

The Portland district has been searching for a new superintendent for just over a year. Former Superintendent Carole Smith stepped down in July 2016 following a controversy over lead in the water.

It’s the second time this week that Portland has looked to the Bay Area to fill a key position. Danielle Outlaw is moving from Oakland to become chief of police.
