Relay for Life Menlo Park, an overnight community fundraising walk for the American Cancer Society, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 12-13, at Burgess Park in the Menlo Park Civic Center, 701 Laurel St.

The opening ceremony is at 11 a.m. Saturday, and the closing ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. During the 24-hour relay, team members take turns walking a course at Burgess Park, where all events take place.

This year’s theme, “Road to Recovery,” encourages family participation. Among the activities is a Corvette car show Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., live music throughout the day, and the screening of the family film “Cars” at 9 p.m. Saturday.

Events include the Survivor’s lap, Saturday at 11 a.m., when cancer survivors take the first lap around the track; and the Luminaria ceremony, when small candle-lit paper lanterns are used to honor people who have fought cancer. The lanterns are lit from 10 p.m. until early morning Sunday.

Relay for Life aims to “increase community awareness to support cancer prevention, treatment, and cure,” says Betty Meissner, who started her Relay team, Joie de Vivre (Joy of Living), in honor of her husband, a survivor of colon cancer.
