St. Joseph’s In Long Beach Makes Music Education Key | Entertainment – California News

Music can change the way students learn and adapt to their learning environment.

That’s according to Bruno Cilloniz — referred to as “Mr. C” amongst the students — musical director at St. Joseph’s Elementary School.

“I started the program from scratch,” Cilloniz said. “We just ended a two week-long band camp. St. Joseph’s went from no music program to students being trained by some of the most reputable coaches in the world (at the camp).”

The band program at the Catholic school was non-existent until Cilloniz took the stage and began laying the groundwork for the program, which is entering its third year.

“We have one of the biggest bands — if not the biggest — in Long Beach,” he said. “In just a short amount of time, we’ve been doing a lot of damage.”

The damage, he added, is a good thing. Students as young as 9 years old are being introduced to music, and they’re excelling.
