Damon Albarn only needed one sentence to properly sum up the collective mood at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
“It’s (expletive) marvelous to be here,” the Gorillaz front man beamed to the tens of thousands of music lovers assembled before him.
And he was right. It was great to be back in the park, among both friends and strangers, and kicking off the 10th annual Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.
Day One (Friday, Aug. 11) featured a number of memorable moments — from a Gorillaz’s headlining set that was rich with guest stars to Tove Lo’s much-discussed breast-flashing set.

Yet, what this day mainly underscored was how beloved this festival has grown during its 10 years of existence. People just love Outside Lands — the feel, the vibe, the setting, the food and drink — to the point where the actual lineup almost seems of secondary importance.
Fortunately, the promoters always come up with intriguing bills for Outside Lands. And this year’s three-day festival (which continues through Aug. 13) is no different.
Besides Gorillaz and an uninhibited Tove Lo, the first day of the festival featured such top talents as alt-J, Belle & Sebastian, Little Dragon and Fleet Foxes. The Day Two headliner was scheduled to be mighty Metallica — which also topped the festival bill in 2012 — with such supporting acts as Cage the Elephant, Dawes, Thundercat, Vance Joy, the Avett Brothers and more.
