Robert and Lois Burkhardt of Barstow celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 30 with their family in La Jolla.
The couple married in Jackson, Michigan in 1947 after meeting two years earlier when Robert Burkhardt came home on leave from the Army. They have three sons and one granddaughter.
Robert Burkhardt graduated from Michigan State University with an MBA in 1977. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1974 as a major and then worked as chief of planning directorate for Fort Irwin.
He retired from Fort Irwin in 1995 and then was a secretary of the Southern California Association of Military Planners, as well as a grand juror (and foreman) for the County of San Bernardino, for three years.
Lois Burkhardt served as a scanning coordinator for the newly built commissary at Fort Irwin for 10 years, from which she also retired in 1995. Both have been active members of Concordia Lutheran Church in Barstow since 1984.
The family hosted a special anniversary celebration at Concordia Lutheran Church in Barstow on Aug. 27.
