BRIDGEPORT—A 19-year-old man was shot dead Thursday around 11 p.m., police spokesman Av Harris said.
Eric Diaz was found shot in the stomach after police responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection of Beardsley Street and Newfield Avenue.
“He was transported to Bridgeport Hospital by ambulance, where hours later he died,” Harris said. “At this time, the motive for the homicide is unclear.”
Diaz was killed three blocks from his last known address, at 5 Yarrington Court. A sign on the building Friday morning indicated that it was vacant.
At the scene of the homicide Friday morning, several people who said that they knew Diaz had driven to the scene. None gave their names.
On social media, Diaz’s family members mourned openly on Facebook.
“I Cant Believe my little brother gone,” wrote Jonathan Ocasio, who Diaz had identified as his brother on his Facebook page. “Words cant describe how this feels. You had so much talent , it Crushes me to see your life Cut at such a young age.”
It’s the 20th homicide in Bridgeport, and there are still three months left in the year. In 2016, police recorded a total of 10 homicides, the lowest in over a decade.
Police have cleared 13 of 2017’s homicides through arrests, according Capt. Roderick Porter. One has been determined a suicide and another was an officer-involved shooting.
The last reported gun homicide took place on Aug. 24 two blocks from where Diaz was killed, in front of a house on 6th Street.
