For the third consecutive year, the Verizon IndyCar Series championship will be decided on a road course, as the 2017 season comes to a close at the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, Sept, 15-17. Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden enters the race weekend with a narrow three-point lead over Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon. Team Penske teammates Helio Castroneves (-22 points) and Simon Pagenaud (-34 points) round out the top four. With double-points on the line in Sonoma, Will Power, fifth in the standings (-68 points), Nevada City native Alexander Rossi, sixth in the standings (-84 points) and Graham Rahal, seventh in the standings (-94 points), also remain in contention for the championship.
But, it is a big weekend for racing at Sonoma because not only the Indy cars will be racing, but the Pirelli World Challenge Series, Formula Car Challenge Series and the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge share the weekend with the Verizon IndyCar Series season finale.
New for 2017, the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama makes its first-ever stop at Sonoma Raceway. The IMSA-sanctioned series is one of the largest of Porsche’s 20 single-make Cup Challenge series in the world. The series produces intense, exciting competition for semi-professional and aspiring professional drivers in the worlds most produced and iconic race car, the Porsche GT3 Cup. The Porsches will hit the track for main events on Saturday (12:45 p.m.) and Sunday (12:15 p.m.)
