Corazón Healdsburg, in collaboration with Dr. Lori Rhodes, has announced the launch of FirstGen College Counseling. Beginning this month, 30 college-bound ninth, 10th, and 11th grade Healdsburg High School students, who will be first in their families to attend a four-year university, will start this innovative program.
Working with Rhodes and her team, these historically underserved students will begin, early in their high school careers, to receive comprehensive one-on-one support. Collaborating with school counselors and other college access partners, FirstGen meets individually with students to help them navigate the often complicated and overwhelming college application process.
FirstGen participants have stated their desire to attend a four-year college. They are enrolled in college preparatory classes at Healdsburg High School, such as honors and Advanced Placement level courses. These students are not only taking the most challenging classes the high school offers, they are excelling with college-track grade point averages.
For parents who did not attend college, the complicated process of applying and seeking financial aid can feel overwhelming. FirstGen assists and advises students through building their college resumes, while Corazón Healdsburg helps enlist parent and family support with bimonthly potluck dinners. At these dinners, guest speakers will discuss issues such as financial planning for college and easing fears and concerns about students attending college far from home.
