A local State Farm agent has been honored by a Department of Defense program for his efforts in helping an employee excel at both work, and with the U.S. Navy Reserve.
Derek McCoy received the Patriot Award on Thursday, a civilian award administered by the DOD through its Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) office. He was nominated by account manager Zane Worsencroft, a petty officer second class in the Navy Reserve.
The award recognizes supervisors for their support of Guard and Reserve employees. Nominations must come from a Guard or Reserve member, or their family.
“It’s a real honor,” McCoy said after being presented the award Thursday morning by Brian Doyle, the ESGR employer outreach coordinator for Arkansas. “I don’t feel like anything I did went above and beyond. I just supported him like we should support all our reservists.”
Worsencroft said McCoy has given him paid time off while he attends Reserve training.
“I’ve heard of other [Reservists] having trouble taking off, that their bosses were not happy with them being out,” Worsencroft said. “He’s always been supportive. I’m really blessed to work here.”
McCoy said he was just trying to support his employee.
