Two local teams that have started in opposite directions meet when Mira Costa visits El Segundo Friday. Mira Costa has dropped its first two games while El Segundo comes in with an undefeated record.
For Mira Costa head coach Don Morrow, he is looking for something positive and is ready to come out with a win.
“We haven’t played very well,” Morrow said. “We’ve made a lot of mistakes. We’ve played two good teams, so when you play two good teams and you don’t play particularly well, scores kind of wind up like that.”
Last year, it was a turning point game for both teams. Mira Costa lost its quarterback David Arredondo and threw its season that had high expectations . Reed Vabrey replaced Arredondo at quarterback in the 18-14 loss.
“It was a pretty crazy game,” Vabrey said. “I remember it pretty vividly.”
“Even that night, we had our chances,” Morrow said. “They’re a good team. They’ve have had several years where they have won 10 games, so it is going to be another tough game. We’re going to have to play better than what we’ve played in order to come out on top.”
El Segundo went on to a 10-2 season and advanced into the second round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. Mira Costa won Bay League and reached some of its goals. But it was not what they expected with an All-CIF quarterback returning for his final season.
“It was a bitter end for us (last year),” Vabrey said. “For me and I think for the team, we want to win this pretty badly.”
