It was with great dismay I read Sunday’s column by David Harsanyi regarding the line of questioning by United States Sens. Richard Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, Al Franken and Bernie Sanders (all pillars on the progressive movement) during several recent confirmation hearings.
Article VI of the Constitution states, “No religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”
Evidently these senators do not feel this clause applies to them — or maybe they feel it’s OK to apply a test just to Christians.
If the United States is ever to return to the principles on which it was founded and which made it a great nation, we must demand that our elected representatives abide by their oath to defend and uphold the U.S. Constitution, not as they choose to interpret it, but as it is written. If they cannot or will not live up to that oath, then it is the citizens’ responsibility to elect people who will.
