Tiny scrolls inscribed with “Barbara and George” announced the engagement of Miss Barbara Mack and George Polhemus at a tea Sept. 10, hosted by her sister, Mrs. Donal Mahon. Mrs. Hugh Mack, mother of the bride-elect, and Mrs. George Barney, mother of the future groom, assisted.
Elk Grove Grange No. 86 is sponsoring a dinner Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. to raise money to finish their quota for the California State Grange Building.
The dedication and burning of the mortgage will be one of the highlights of the California State Grange’s 75th – diamond jubilee – convention, which is to be held in Sacramento in October.

Sept. 11, 1957
Francis Borba and sons, Bill and Bob, of West Sacramento, and his brother, Carl Borba, of San Jose, went dove hunting on the Wilton ranch of Francis Borba’s parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Will Green. Between them, they bagged 10 birds.
They cleaned the doves and left them on the back porch of the Green ranch house while they went inside. Returning later to retrieve them, they found them gone.
Nearby sat Sandy, Borba’s Weimaraner dog with a well-fed look on his face. While the hunters were inside, Sandy had made the most of his opportunities and had dined well on the doves, devouring every one of them.
