A 10-year veteran deputy of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting two female inmates, officials announced Thursday.
Giancarlo Scotti, 31, a San Pedro High School graduate and current resident of the community, was on duty when he was taken into custody Wednesday night, within hours of the allegation, including “rape under color of authority,” Sheriff Jim McDonnell said during a news conference at downtown Los Angeles’ Hall of Justice.
Scotti was booked on suspicion of two counts each of rape under color of authority and oral copulation under color of authority, McDonnell said. “He was booked at the sheriff’s Norwalk station and released on $100,000 bail.”
Scotti has been placed on administrative leave.
McDonnell said one of the female inmates inside the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood filed a complaint, and a subsequent investigation revealed there were two alleged victims. He said the alleged crime “points to a violation of public trust and of the law.’’
“At this time there’s no indication or evidence that any other personnel were involved and the focus of this investigation remains on one individual,’’ the sheriff said.
“It’s disturbing to me,” a somber McDonnell said at the news conference. “This is appalling.
“The crime of this nature is horrific,’’ he said. “Criminal misconduct, especially criminal misconduct that preys on a vulnerable population, will not be tolerated and will be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
