A 22-year-old man apparently involved in a family dispute in Hermosa Beach shot himself in the head Thursday in his car after a police officer pulled him over.
The attempted suicide prompted closure of the southbound lanes on Pacific Coast Highway near Artesia Boulevard. Northbound lanes were open.
Officers encountered the man after responding to a family disturbance call about 4:30 p.m. at a home at 22nd Street and Pacific Coast Highway.
The man was gone, but an officer spotted him driving along Pacific Coast Highway. The man pulled over for the traffic stop, but shot himself in the head. The officer witnessed the shooting and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as did paramedics, before the unidentified man was taken to a hospital.
