Teen father accused of abandoning infant in Bay Area parking lot pleads not guilty – California News

A Fairfield man facing charges of child abandonment and cruelty for allegedly leaving his 16-day-old child in a parking lot before getting into a drunken vehicle collision in July made a brief court appearance Thursday.

Daniel S. Mitchell, 19, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, in addition to charges of committing a felony while on bail and possession of suspected cocaine, DUI, and hit and run driving resulting in property damage.

Mitchell’s son was found around 3:15 p.m. July 24, when employees of a barbershop in the Sunset Shopping Center saw a baby carrier in the parking lot. The employees contacted police, and the child was transported to an area hospital for his wounds. Video surveillance footage led police to identify Mitchell’s vehicle.

As police investigated the scene at the Sunset Shopping Center, Mitchell reportedly got into a car wreck in the 1000 block of B. Gale Wilson Boulevard while drunk. Mitchell was later hospitalized for minor wounds, and later arrested. He is due back in court Oct. 5 for another readiness conference and preliminary hearing setting.

He remains jailed with a bail amount of $525,001.
